A Renovated School Bus of Dreams Opens Children’s Eyes to Reading...

Vernon Coaker MP for Gedling visited the brand new exciting and creative facility on Friday 6th July 2018

 

 

Pinewood Infant School is an outstanding infant school on the Killisick Estate in Arnold with 226 children currently on role.  The School sourced an old double decker bus from Warrington a few years ago and have created an imaginative, exciting and compelling learning space for children and it has created a lifelong love for reading for the children at the school.

The bus has been transformed into a spectacular learning space and it continues to promote reading for pleasure across school. 

 

Vernon Coaker the Member of Parliament for Gedling said ‘This is a truly remarkable learning space, the transformation is spectacular and to see the how much the children love being there and love reading as a result is fantastic. The staff have worked incredibly hard to create something totally unique for the children. It was a pleasure to be invited today and to read to the children’

 

The site manager at Pinewood Infant School, like all of the school’s staff go that extra mile to make our school the outstanding school it is. So, in addition to keeping the school site running effectively, Garry has magically transformed the space inside the bus with handmade shelves and units using natural and locally sourced materials. One of the teaching assistant's Chloe has painted some magical scenes throughout the bus to create a woodland theme. Many staff have contributed to the transformation in some way.

 

Head Teacher - Rachel Otter said ‘I had 7 Year 2 reluctant boy writers involved in a writing project over several lunchtimes.  Firstly they wrote to Garry asking for his help, wrote to thank him afterwards, measured and wrote to a local flooring company and made lists of what we needed. They have been heavily involved in the design since the beginning and it has given them a real sense of purpose for their writing - writing for a purpose at its best! 

 

"Never have I known boys grow in confidence so much in their writing so quickly and never have I known boys wanting to give up their lunchtimes to come inside and write before. It has been so nice to see their enthusiasm grow. Writing is not just about key stage results, it is also about children seeing themselves as writers and enjoying the whole process. It has been a real delight from start to finish. "

 

The children use the bus at playtimes, lunchtimes and a scheduled library time slot each week to enjoy reading fiction, non-fiction, poems, magazines and information about authors. There are also bears inside for the children to read to, story sacks and puppets to promote story telling. Reading quotes from Dr Seuss books feature highly and the children voted for pictures from 2 famous children’s books to fill the back windows.
